I live in houston I am wanting to do this, but everyone keeps saying what about snakes!? So what's you take on that? That's really the only thing holding me back. Thanks

There is no poison in the water that would kill a snake that happened into a Natural Swimming Pool/Pond. However, because the water is crystal-clear (not murky and with no muddy bottom) you would be able to easily see a snake before getting in and could scoop it out with a pool net.

I have an inground concrete pool that I'd liked to convert to a natural pool. The deep end is really deep. Can I add gravel, rocks, or something to take the pool from 9 down to 5 feet? I love natural pools.

Bust out old pile old pool in deep end and rebuild. Super easy.

Thanks for your comment Scott, though we definitely don't recommend demo-ing anything until you have a solid conversion plan! Though you are correct that sometimes it is best to demo the existing pool (especially when it is very old or damaged) then reshape the hole in order to create the ideal Natural Swimming Pool/Pond for the space, that is not always the right choice. If you start with a clear design plan, including an itemized materials list with local material sources (which a Total Habitat designer can help you with!) you will save money and heartache in the long run and end up with a beautiful Natural Swimming Pool/Pond you will enjoy for years to come!

Hi Deb! We can help you develop a custom conversion plan that is right for your specific pool-- figuring out where to fit in the biological filtration system is the most important thing for ensuring the water is crystal clear and clean! Here is a link to more general info about converting a traditional pool into a chlorine-free Natural Swimming Pool/Pond:

I'm also curious how these work in Texas, with the heat. Seems like most of what I see about them is up north or Europe.

Thanks for the questions David, we now have several pools that are thriving in Texas, as well as Oklahoma, Tennessee, and the Carolinas that are all doing well. The way we build our natural filters into the pool works great in all climates. We do like to make adjustments specific to the climate we are building in, but our filtration concept remains the same.

I have an existing pond that I’d like to pump dry and turn into swimming pond, is this something you would be able to help with?

I’m wondering about mosquitos...here in central Texas they are terrible! Would this increase them in the backyard?

Hi Cori, we don't have any problems with mosquitos in our NSP's. This is mainly because we have constant water circulation (no stagnant water, which they prefer) and lots of natural predators like frogs and dragonflies.

Do you have any turtles that have made it their home as well? We are i the process of making a 3,000g pond. I'm torn between a swimming pond and a pond for our current 3 turtles and 5 goldfish.

Hi Tara! A NSP would be great for your goldfish and turtles: The built-in biological filtration and circulation system would be adequate to filter out their waste and you'd have all the benefits of a regular backyard pond but with great water clarity and the ability to cool off in the summer! You'd want to provide a beach area and/or build an Essential style NSP which has gently sloping edges all the way around, so your turtles have plenty of safe opportunities to get in and out.

Thank you Gerald! We had a great time consulting on this pool, the plants are thriving and the whole nsp ecosystem has matured really beautifully.
