FAQ: Where is the Biological Filter in a Natural Swimming Pool?

It is important to understand that a biological filter is not a device or unit that you can "hook up" to any pool or pond like you can with a water pump or other type of filter (like a cartridge, sand or bead filter).  A biological filter at the scale needed to clean a swimming pool or pond is, by necessity, a rather large thing, consisting of several suction tubes that pull water down through special filter gravel. We didn't invent biological filters, which have been used for many years to clean water; we just figured out how to make them work for swimming pools and ponds!

To save space (and because it just makes sense), we usually build our biological filters right into the walls and/or floors of our NSP's; that way, the biological filter surrounds the swimming area, constantly circulating and cleaning the water!  If you've talked to some other NSP builder that says you need some separate filter pond or large "regeneration zone" (which you probably don't have space for) just know there is another way! We pack in what amounts to acres of living space for beneficial bacteria into our biological filters; we just do it in a smarter, more compact way, which saves money and yard space!
