FAQ: What is a Natural Swimming Pool or "NSP"?

A Natural Swimming Pool/Pond, aka NSP, swimming pond, swimming hole, natural pool, or eco pool, is a manmade body of water that features natural, fresh water which is cleaned using a built-in biological filter instead of traditional pool cleaning methods (like chlorine or salt). NSP's typically look more like ponds than traditional chlorine pools and are usually constructed of natural materials like boulders, decorative gravel and water plants over a durable pond liner, rather than with concrete, plaster and tile like a traditional chlorine pool.

Though they may look natural, NSP's feature extensive built-in plumbing systems which are constantly circulating water down through the biological filter (which is primarily living space for beneficial bacteria) then back up to the surface to collect oxygen.

There are different types of NSP's: The European-based NSP system (BioNova & BioTop are example companies) is actually very different from our NSP system. Using our years of experience in the zoo & aquarium industry, we developed our NSP system specifically for the warmer, more variable climate of North America. Unlike others, our system uses powerful built-in biological filters (similar to an industrial-sized aquarium) to keep water clean & clear (with no green or cloudy water and no muddy or mucky bottom).
