FAQ: Does a Natural Swimming Pool Need a Separate Filter Pond or Regeneration Zone?

This is a common misconception about Natural Swimming Pools: There are other "natural pool" systems out there that require a separate pond or large "regeneration" area next to the swimming pool for filtration purposes. We have clients who were told by other companies that their yard was just not big enough for a Natural Swimming Pool; this couldn't be further from the truth! At Total Habitat, we do things differently.

We pack a mighty biological filter into the walls and floors of our NSP's and aggressively move water through them; cleaning water more effectively in a smaller space. Plants alone (even in expansive zones) just don't provide the cleaning horsepower needed for the warmer climate we have here in the USA. Unlike in a simple plant filter or "regeneration zone", we provide a huge amount of living space for beneficial bacteria in our biological filters and draw oxygenated water through it. As water passes by, the beneficial bacteria strip the water of impurities. Expanded shale is our favorite filter media, because it is completely inert (gives off nothing), and it naturally absorbs phosphates (which is string algae's favorite food). We decorate the filter media with plants and rounded river rocks.

Our biological filters can be engineered for any size, shape or environment - just as in large commercial aquariums and aquaculture.
We can hide our biological filters under the floor or behind the walls or we can celebrate them with planted edges and coves. Because our formula tells us the size of bio-filter needed for each individual pool in linear feet (not simply square footage of water), we can put our biological filters just about anywhere!

Before you start planning huge areas for "regeneration zones" call us, we can save you space and increase your swimming pleasure - even in tropical, indoor or desert places.
